Jane Gowen Voice Studio
Whether teaching, directing, or performing, Jane Gowen combines functional knowledge of the voice, compassionate care for the singer’s mind and body, and a belief in the power of student choice and creative play. She collaborates with singers to maximize learning, minimize injury, and develop an empowered toolbox for artistic expression. Her approach is grounded in professional performing experience, a M.M. in Voice Performance, B.S. in Music Education, and advanced studies from the voice pedagogy institutes of Shenandoah Conservatory and Westminster Choir College. Her voice teachers have included Grammy-Nominated Soprano Fotina Naumenko, NYC-based performer Beth Stafford Laird, Melissa McCann, and Youna Hartgraves. As a performer, Jane is a state- and regional-level winner and national qualifier in the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) student auditions in both the classical and musical theatre categories. Recent credits include the Children’s Performing Arts production of Frozen Jr. (MD), Gilbert & Sullivan Very Light Opera Company’s production of Iolanthe (Ensemble) and the Missouri Valley Chamber Orchestra’s production of Cosi fan Tutte (Despina). She currently runs a thriving voice studio of singers aged 11 - 24 both in-person (White Bear Lake, MN) and virtual (nationwide). Read more about Jane here.

Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy combines functional knowledge of the voice with compassionate care for the singer’s mind and body. Grounded in professional experience, graduate studies in voice, a degree in education, and lifelong musicianship, I collaborate with my students to maximize learning, minimize injury, and fuel creative, artistic expression. I delight in listening and responding to each unique voice, personal goals, and interests. I balance structure and clear objectives with utmost respect for the human body’s and voice’s natural fluctuations. Every skill needs time for mastery. In an exciting—and patient—journey, my students become independent musicians, able to make their mark on the musical world.
Diversity Statement
I acknowledge how my multiple privileges—including race, class, education, access, gender identity, and ability—impact the lens through which I approach the work of teaching voice. I also acknowledge both my experience and imperfection with the practice of teaching voice. I honor my scope of practice as a voice professional, not a mental health care provider. I value kind, respectful feedback regarding my ongoing effort to approach this practice with diversity, equity, and inclusion in mind. I ask that you also respect that it may take me time to evaluate the feedback and implement appropriate changes accordingly.

Whenever possible in these cases, the teacher will “refer out” and provide assistance seeking a teacher who will meet the student’s unique needs or goals.
