Meet the Teacher
Hi, there! My name is Jane Gowen. I am a singer, voice teacher, and collaborator.
If I haven’t met you yet, you may find it helpful to click here to learn more about my education and training.
Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy combines functional knowledge of the voice with compassionate care for the singer’s mind and body. Grounded in professional experience, graduate studies in voice, a degree in education, and lifelong musicianship, I collaborate with my students to maximize learning, minimize injury, and fuel creative, artistic expression. I delight in listening and responding to each unique voice, personal goals, and interests. I balance structure and clear objectives with utmost respect for the human body’s and voice’s natural fluctuations. Every skill needs time for mastery. In an exciting—and patient—journey, my students become independent musicians, able to make their mark on the musical world.
Diversity Statement
I acknowledge how my multiple privileges—including race, class, education, access, gender identity, and ability—impact the lens through which I approach the work of teaching voice. I also acknowledge both my experience and imperfection with the practice of teaching voice. I honor my scope of practice as a voice professional, not a mental health care provider. I value kind, respectful feedback regarding my ongoing effort to approach this practice with diversity, equity, and inclusion in mind. I ask that you also respect that it may take me time to evaluate the feedback and implement appropriate changes accordingly.
This studio has a non-discrimination policy concerning age, sex, gender identity and/or expression, sexual orientation, race, color, creed, ethnicity, national origin, ancestry, religious beliefs, marital status, familial status, disability, veteran status, political identity, medical history, vaccination status, or personally held beliefs. At the same time, there are instances in which the teacher or student may decide the partnership is not the best fit. Whenever possible in these cases, the teacher will “refer out” and provide assistance seeking a teacher who will meet the student’s unique needs or goals.

Hear from my students…
-
Ava, age 18
“Over the past 3 years, Jane has done more for my confidence than anything or anyone else has. Before I started lessons with her, I actively avoided performing on my own. Since training with Jane, that has done a complete 180. I loved getting to sing “Gotta Get Out” at the showcase. I felt confident, I had fun, and I wasn’t nervous the whole time! That could not have been achieved without her teaching and support.”
-
Veda, age 13
"Taking voice lessons from Miss Jane really helped me be more confident in my singing. She made it fun while also teaching us singing techniques."
-
Ivy, age 11
"I sang a watermelon song and even though I was scared, I knew it would be ok because Miss Jane sang the song with me."
-
Heather, parent
"My daughters loved taking lessons with Miss Jane. They grew in their skills and confidence. She worked with my younger daughter, especially, to help her through her nerves about singing at a recital. She made lessons fun and enjoyable!"
-
Michelle, adult
"Jane is an excellent teacher! She made me feel comfortable doing something that was completely out of my comfort zone. She's incredibly talented and confident. I learned a lot from her and now feel more confident in my own singing!"
-
Lori, parent
"Liam went from being a good singer who was pretty timid and quiet, to seeming much more confident and able to perform well and project his voice."
-

-
